The Stony Brook community is in mourning following the tragic loss of Bryan Collins, the esteemed football defensive coordinator. Known not only for his exceptional coaching abilities but also for his unwavering dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of young people, Collins leaves behind a profound legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Devastating Loss

"Our Stony Brook Athletics family is devastated by the sudden passing of our dear friend and colleague Bryan Collins. He was an elite human being on every level who was truly passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people. Everyone who knew Bryan loved him, and he always returned that love right back. He was a legendary coach and administrator, but his greatest legacy will always be as a kind, caring soul. My thoughts are with his wife Patti, children Tyler and Meg, and everyone who knew and loved him," expressed Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron.

A Mentor and a Role Model

Bryan Collins transcended the role of a football coach. He was a mentor, a guide, and an inspiration to countless young individuals. Collins firmly believed in the power of education and character development, viewing sports as a means to foster personal growth and instill important life lessons.

"I first and foremost send my deepest sympathy to the Collins family and to all of Bryan's former student-athletes and colleagues. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve alongside Bryan over the past couple of years. As an opposing coach, he served as a mentor, and I have learned a great deal from working with him during our time together at Stony Brook. We certainly lose a great football coach, but more importantly a great person," shared head coach Chuck Priore.

A Remarkable Journey

Collins joined the Stony Brook staff in the summer of 2021, initially serving as the Seawolves' defensive line coach. However, due to his exceptional expertise and commitment, he was swiftly promoted to the role of defensive coordinator in January of the following year. His impact on the team was immeasurable, elevating both the performance and spirit of the players.

Before his tenure at Stony Brook, Collins etched his name in Long Island football history. He spent an impressive 23 seasons as the head coach at LIU Post, where he became the program's all-time winningest coach. Under his guidance, LIU Post enjoyed six NCAA Tournament appearances and secured eight Northeast 10 Conference championships.
